Reasons to pause

Chapter seven · The reading path

# Which answers deserve a pause?

Look closely at a missing prescription, a vague source or a claim that skips over the medicine’s status.

## Pause at a missing prescription or a blurred claim

A pharmacy needs a valid prescription to supply a prescription-only medicine under US law checked September 26, 2026.

The claim “FDA approved” was misleading for a compounded medicine as of September 26, 2026.

FDA also identifies claims that compounded medicines are the same as approved products as misleading.

Ask for the exact product, the prescriber’s assessment and the dispensing pharmacy. A reassuring answer needs to address the missing detail.

A prescription

An order for a medicine from a practitioner who is licensed to prescribe it.

## Ask about quality and the instructions

Poor preparation can contaminate a drug or give it the wrong amount of its active ingredient, FDA explains.

FDA received reports of mistakes measuring compounded semaglutide, with some people needing treatment in hospital.

If the label or instructions are unclear, bring the uncertainty to the pharmacist and prescriber. Ask them to explain it directly.

Peptide medicines do not share a storage rule: the particular product’s label and pharmacy instructions matter.

Contamination

Unwanted material, including germs, getting into a medicine.

## Know when an urgent response matters

MedlinePlus calls anaphylaxis a life-threatening allergic reaction; breathing trouble and swelling in the face or tongue can be signs.

For severe allergic symptoms, MedlinePlus lists emergency help through calling 911, calling your local emergency number or going to the nearest emergency room.

Severe allergic reactions can begin very fast.

Anaphylaxis

This is the medical name for a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction.

## Keep a route back to a person

Before accepting care, ask who answers questions after a visit or delivery. Ask what to do if that person is unavailable.

Through MedWatch, people can report a drug problem to FDA themselves.

Reports cannot, by themselves, prove a drug caused the experience being reported.

MedWatch

The FDA route for telling the agency about a problem with a drug or another medical product.
