Chapter three · The reading path

# Whose name can you check?

Ask separately about the person assessing you and the pharmacy filling a prescription.

## Check a name against the right record

Ask who will assess your concern, including their role, full name and licence details. Separately, request the dispensing pharmacy’s full name.

State medical boards publish physician licence records and public disciplinary information.

Use the state-board directory to choose your state and open the board’s own website.

It is published by the group of boards that give doctors permission to practise.

Open the board for the state relevant to your visit. Match the full name and the licence record. If the role is not a physician, ask which professional board holds that person’s record.

## Find the pharmacy’s own record

Pharmacy licensing has a separate state board and a separate public lookup.

FDA’s state search links let you look for the pharmacy named on a label.

Rules checked September 26, 2026 say most states require a pharmacy shipping medicine there to hold that state’s licence or permit.

Ask the pharmacy which record applies to shipping to your state. If the names do not match, leave the question open until someone explains the difference.

Non-resident licence

This is a receiving state’s permission for a pharmacy based elsewhere to supply people there.

## What is the record able to confirm?

Finding no public record of action against a doctor tells you only that no such action is recorded; it is no rating of the doctor’s skill.

A pharmacy licence gives no guarantee that each prescription is filled correctly.

Under FDA rules checked September 26, 2026, appearing on its register does not mean a facility or its medicines have FDA approval.

You can still ask about the medicine, the assessment and how questions are handled after it arrives.

A listing or filing. Read what that particular register checks before treating it as an endorsement.
