Introduction

Follow a source

Chapter eight · The reading path

# What is the source really saying?

A licence record, a medicine approval and a policy document answer different questions.

## Choose a source that matches the question

Looking for a licence? Open the state record. Looking for an approval claim? Ask which exact medicine the claim concerns. Looking at a rule about an online visit? Check whether it is a state rule or guidance.

Rules checked September 26, 2026 say a medicine or facility may appear in FDA’s register without having the agency’s approval.

Keep the question narrow. A source can answer what it covers while leaving your next question open.

Scope

The particular question a document can answer, along with the limits it states.

## Open a drawer that matches your question.

The medicine and its preparation

Use FDA’s consumer explanations to separate approval from compounding. A product label concerns a named medicine.

The online assessment

Read the online-visit guidance written by a group of state boards that license doctors. HHS explains which state must give the doctor permission to treat you.

The price and the insurance route

Urgent symptoms and medicine reports

MedlinePlus explains severe allergic reactions. MedWatch is the FDA route for reporting a medical product problem.

## Read the limits alongside the answer

The Federation of State Medical Boards’ online-visit document advises the boards; each state sets the rules its doctors must obey.

A pharmacy’s licence record confirms permission to operate, but gives no guarantee that every prescription is filled correctly.

Read the date beside a claim. Ask whether the rule still fits the place and product you mean. Bring your state, plan or health history into the question where it matters. A broad phrase can hide the detail you need.
